St. Mary's River Project and Potomac River Scenic Trail

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer announced that funding for two projects important to Southern Maryland is included at his request, in the Fiscal Year 2000 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. The St. Mary's River project will receive $100,000 and the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail will receive $150,000.

St. Mary's River Project, $100,000

Rapid growth in St. Mary's County is creating mounting environmental threats to the St. Mary's River. In order to keep the river clean and healthy, baseline data on water quality and streambed erosion is needed. This funding would expand the existing monitoring sites to include several additional stations to help determine the health of the watershed and to ensure the future health of the river. This brings the total funds secured for this project by Congressman Hoyer, to $420,000.

"The St. Mary's River is a treasure to the people of Southern Maryland. By investing this money now, we are ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy this natural resource," said Congressman Hoyer. "I will continue to search for ways to keep our environment clean and preserved for our children."

Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, $150,000

The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail was designated under 1983 legislation, which defines the trail as a "corridor" of approximately 704 miles following the Potomac River in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The funds secured by Congressman Hoyer will allow the employment of a full-time National Park Service employee to coordinate recreational activities and tourism related projects along the trail. It will also provide the coordination of activities among federal, state and local agencies to the benefit of the entire region's tourism-related economy. The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail is a program under the control of the Interior Department.

"The Potomac River has historical significance for the history of this nation. Some of our greatest leaders walked the shores of the Potomac River," said Congressman Hoyer. "This funding will allow thousands of tourists to enjoy activities along this River of major national importance."
