September 23rd Proclaimed Hunting & Fishing Day in VA

Governor James S. Gilmore, III has signed a Certificate of Recognition to officially declare Saturday, September 23, 2000, as Hunting & Fishing Day throughout the Commonwealth. In the Certificate of Recognition Governor Gilmore cited the significant contributions hunters and anglers make to Virginia's economy and to conservation of wildlife and natural resources. The designation further recognizes that hunting and fishing are inherent rights and require skills which are passed from generation to generation, developing stronger family ties and an appreciation for those who came before us and a respect for the land.

The Commonwealth's Hunting & Fishing Day is part of the coast-to-coast celebration of National Hunting & Fishing Day, which was first established in 1972 by Congress to acknowledge and thank hunters and anglers for their conservation achievements. Revenue from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses is the primary source of funding for wildlife management and restoration programs, habitat improvement and general conservation efforts.

It is the mission of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to manage Virginia's wildlife and inland fish to maintain optimum populations of all species to serve the needs of the Commonwealth; to provide opportunities for all to enjoy wildlife, inland fish, boating and related outdoor recreation; and to promote safety for persons and property in connection with boating, hunting and fishing. On Saturday, September 23, 2000, the Department encourages all Virginians to enjoy a day in the outdoors and to share in the stewardship and conservation of our wildlife resources.
