One of the largest schooner races in the world, the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race brings together schooners from throughout the United States and beyond. This race was founded to "promote public awareness of the Chesapeake Bay's maritime heritage and to encourage the preservation and improvement of the Chesapeake's natural resources." To meet this goal the proceeds of the race are donated to charitable organizations involved in conservation of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay."
Each year since the event's inception, Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has been chosen to receive all schooner entry fees, totaling nearly $30,000. Many schooners also make extra donations to support "Save the Bay" programs.
