Smallwood State Park Looking for Volunteers to Help Construct New Playground

Volunteers are needed to help construct a tire playground at Smallwood State Park. The project, which will take place on Oct. 16-19, is a joint effort of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Environmental Service.

Approximately 40 volunteers are needed to complete the four-day project, that will use recycled tires and plastic and wooden elements to create a safe new recreation area. To ensure the enjoyment of all Maryland children, 80 percent of the playground will be accessible to children with disabilities.

Of the 40 volunteers, 15 should have basic construction and hand tools skills. A project manager from playground designers Learning Structures Inc., will be on site to provide logistical instruction.

Individuals, businesses, and community and school organizations are invited to help with this project. Volunteers are asked to register in advance. To register, or for more information, contact Robin Melton, at Smallwood State Park, by calling 301-743-7613.
