VA State Record Cobia Boated

A 104 -pound, 8-ounce cobia caught on July 7th by Steve Hasynic of Norfolk has been certified as the new Virginia state record by the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament.

Hasynic caught his fish off at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel after a grueling fight lasting over 45 minutes. The cobia hit a piece of menhaden fished on the bottom, and immediately took off on a blistering run that entangled the fishing line with the rope of the chum bucket. Fortunately, the line cut through the rope, enabling the fight to proceed. Capt. Frank Harrell, Jr. was forced to pull the boat’s anchor and follow the fish, as the cobia threatened to take all the line off the reel, a Penn 320GTI spooled with 40-pound test line, at least twice during the fight.

Hasynic’s cobia measured 72 inches in length and had a 36-inch girth.

The prior state record of 103-pounds, 8-ounces was caught at Swash Light off Mobjack Bay in the Chesapeake Bay by Edward K. Brown of Gloucester. Brown caught his fish on September 17, 1980.
