At the request of the County Executives in four Maryland jurisdictions, Governor Parris N. Glendening will issue an Executive Order banning the discharge of firearms for recreational purposes, including hunting, in Montgomery, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel and Howard Counties. Maryland State Police and local law enforcement officials say such action will help limit public reports of the discharge of firearms that can distract personnel and equipment as those reports are investigated.
“As tips continue to pour in by the thousands, law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to maximize their resources,” said Governor Glendening. “This temporary action can save them valuable time as they work to bring those responsible for these terrible crimes to justice. State Police Superintendent Colonel David Mitchell will coordinate this effort with his counterparts in local jurisdictions to allow police to dedicate their resources to this investigation and to ensure the safety of our citizens. I applaud the efforts of our police personnel as they continue to work around the clock to investigate these horrific acts.”
The ban will remain in effect while the investigation into the sniper attacks continues and does not extend to approved shooting ranges in those jurisdictions.
“This temporary measure will enable the dedicated police officers in these counties to more efficiently maintain their focus and concentrate their resources on the sniper investigation,” said Colonel Mitchell.
“We need to provide as much support for our police officers as possible,” said Anne Arundel County Executive Janet Owens. “It is important that there be no confusion at the sound of gunfire. It is our duty as citizens to support our police, especially at this time.”
