DNR Wrapping Up Fall Trout Stocking

Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service Director Eric C. Schwaab has announced that the 2002 Fall Trout Stocking program will be completed this week. More than 33,000 adult rainbow trout have been stocked into 48 areas in 15 counties. These trout are a mix of 21,000 very nice two year olds averaging ¾ pounds each, and 12,000 smaller yearlings averaging 7 inches to 9 inches.

Unlike our spring trout stocking schedule, areas stocked with fall trout are not affected by closures. Anglers may fish immediately after fall trout are stocked. Anglers are reminded that a freshwater fishing license and trout stamp are required to keep trout in Maryland and to fish any special trout management area. The daily limit for trout in put and take areas is five per day except for areas noted as two per day.

Fall is a great time to fish for trout. Forest leaves are turning brilliant colors and the state has received several inches of much-needed rain. Fall trout fishing is done at a more leisurely pace when compared to the anticipation and excitement centering around our spring opener. Fishing pressure is much lighter and trout hold in good numbers into the winter months. Those not caught during the fall will be waiting for anglers during winter warm-ups and early spring thaws.
