MD Saltwater Sportfishermen's Association Join Ethical Angler Partnership

First Statewide Fishing Group in U.S. to Sign Up

The Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen’s Association (MSSA) became the first state-wide organization to adopt the Ethical Angler code of responsible fishing practices when it signed a partnership agreement with BoatU.S. on November 5, 2002. MSSA will use Ethical Angler as an extra lure in its conservation tackle box to remind sport anglers of the key role they play in marine conservation and to reach newcomers to the sport with principals that can help ensure the future of fishing in Maryland.

MSSA has made fishery conservation a priority since its founding over 20 years ago. The organization will provide its 6,500 members with Ethical Angler materials while incorporating the message into exhibits for the general public at boat and outdoor shows as well at the four major fishing tournaments MSSA sponsors each year.

BoatU.S., the nation’s largest recreational boating organization, developed the code three years ago to promote conservation in partnership the National Marine Fisheries Service. Since that time the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission has joined the partnership to help reach anglers along the East Coast with the seven-part code (see bottom) and the stewardship philosophy it imparts.

“Saltwater angling is growing in popularity and with the addition of MSSA to our partnership, these experienced anglers will be able to reach thousands of newcomers to the sport in Maryland with a message that promotes conservation and responsible recreational fishing principles,” said BoatU.S. chairman and CEO, Richard Schwartz.

BoatU.S. – the nation’s leading advocate for recreational boating issues before Congress and the federal agencies – provides its 535,000 members with a wide array of consumer services including a group-rate marine insurance program that provides over $7 billion in hull coverage; discounts on over 40,000 boating related products; a fleet of more than 400 towing assistance vessels; discounts on fuel and slips at over 670 marinas; and a subscription to BoatU.S. Magazine, the most widely read boating publication in the U.S.
