No Lane Closures on Bay Bridge During Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

To help ensure convenient travel for its customers using the Bay Bridge (US 50/301), the Maryland Transportation Authority announces that there will be no scheduled lane closures at the bridge between 5 a.m. November 27 and 7 p.m. December 2 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Beginning 7 p.m. December 2 and continuing through April 18, 2003, the left lane of the westbound bridge will be closed 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, as part of the ongoing reconstruction of the westbound bridge deck. This phase of the project, which is anticipated to be complete in 2005, involves renovation of the bridge deck and railings in areas east and west of the bridge’s main suspension spans.

New traffic patterns and additional scheduled lane closures include:

·During the continuous left-lane closure, wide-load vehicles will be permitted to travel the westbound span.

·Between December 2 and December 31, two lanes may be closed on the westbound span Sunday through Friday, from  7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, and Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 11 a.m. the following morning

·Between January 1 and February 28, 2003, two lanes may be closed on the westbound span Sunday through Thursday, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, and Friday and Saturday, from 9 p.m. to 11 a.m. the following morning

·Between March 1 and April 15, 2003, two lanes may be closed on the westbound span Sunday through Friday, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning

·Complete closures of the westbound span may be scheduled during overnight hours; two-way traffic will operate on the eastbound span in the event of a complete westbound closure.

Additional closures may be implemented during the project. Closures are subject to change as weather and traffic conditions necessitate. Two-way traffic may be implemented on the eastbound span in the event of significant westbound back ups. If two-way operation is in effect during morning rush hours, traffic will be stopped intermittently between 8:30 and 9 a.m. to allow workers to return the eastbound bridge to a standard traffic pattern.

For additional information on this project, visit the website http://www.baybridgeproject.com/ or contact the Bay Bridge BAYSPAN hotline at 1-877-BAYSPAN (229-7726). Changeable- message signs will display bridge lane-closure information and traffic conditions. Motorists on the Eastern Shore may tune their vehicle radios to 1630 AM, and motorists on the Western Shore may tune their vehicle radios to 1610 AM for specific roadway conditions. To help avoid unnecessary delays caused by disabled vehicles, motorists should check their vehicles’ tires and gasoline and fluid levels prior to traveling the bridge.

The Authority thanks its customers for their patience during this project and urges motorists to obey posted speed limits and overhead-lane control signals, especially while traveling through work zones.

The Maryland Transportation Authority is the state agency that owns and operates Maryland’s seven toll facilities.
