Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary J. Charles Fox has announced the approval of the final Land Unit Plan for the Chapman’s Forest property in Charles County. The plan identifies a long-term vision for the 2,180 acre property and outlines the future management, protection, and conservation of the property’s significant cultural and natural resources while allowing opportunities for appropriate public use, access and natural resource-based recreation.
“In developing this plan we looked at the character and historical significance of this extraordinary property, taking into consideration the need to protect the environmental sensitivity of the area and the public comments we have received,” Secretary Fox said. “While there is clearly a need for more ballfields in western Charles County, the use of this property for ballfields would be inconsistent with the intent of the purchase, as well as our responsibility to protect the integrity of this forest ecosystem.”
Chapman’s Forest, nationally recognized for its significant historical, archeological, and ecological features, is situated next to the Potomac River and Indian Head Highway in Charles County, Maryland. Management recommendations approved today include:
- The use of the historic Mt. Aventine as a historical museum and visitor center, with limited equestrian use in the surrounding area contingent on the development of an equestrian management plan;
- A network of self-guided trails;
- Protection of the most highly sensitive areas from any development;
- A canoe and kayak launch area; and
- An environmental education center.
As part of the plan, Secretary Fox has designated the north portion of the property (north of Indian Head Highway) as Chapman State Park. The southern portion of the property has been designated the Governor Parris N. Glendening Natural Environment Area, emphasizing resource preservation and a greenway link to the Mattawoman Natural Environment Area.
“It is fitting to designate this area in honor of Governor Glendening, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the exceptional resources of Chapman’s Forest are permanently protected from development for the benefit of Maryland’s citizens and future generations,” Secretary Fox said.
The land unit plan will be available next week in Charles County libraries and on DNR’s Web site at: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/
