Throughout June 2003, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay will hold week-long paddling Sojourns on four of the Bay’s largest tributaries – the Susquehanna, Potomac, Patuxent and James Rivers. The 2003 Toyota Prius Chesapeake Bay River Sojourns call attention to the need to help protect the Bay and its rivers while providing a unique on-the-water experience for novice and seasoned paddlers alike.
Since 1990, the Alliance has worked with local river conservation organizations across the Bay watershed to hold week-long paddling and camping trips that celebrate rich history and ecology of the rivers that make the Chesapeake Bay unique. Throughout the week, Sojourners build comradery through daily paddles and programs and share new experiences with others on the trip. Each day, paddlers cover about ten miles of the river, stopping to meet with local communities and their elected officials along the way. Each evening, the Alliance and partner organizations coordinate group meals and environmental programs designed to educate paddlers and their guests about the river's importance to local communities and the Bay region as a whole.
“By connecting paddlers and local communities to their local waters and the Bay, we hope rally additional people around the effort to save this national treasure,” said Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay Executive Director David Bancroft. “Through our partnership with Toyota, we hope to involve a large number of people in Bay restoration.”
