Under cloudy skies but on the heels of a beautiful boating weekend, Maryland Natural Resources Police Col. Scott A. Sewell today reminded boaters of the dangers of operating a boat while intoxicated to kick off National Safe Boating Week.
“Maryland’s waterways are becoming more and more crowded each year in much the same way as Maryland’s highways,” Col. Sewell said. “Unfortunately, boating accidents occur on our waterways every year, resulting in property damage, personal injury, and in some cases fatal injury. Most of these accidents are preventable.”
“Many boating accidents are the result of operating a vessel while under the influence or impaired by alcohol and or drugs,” he continued. “Alcohol, drugs and boating present a formula for disaster. A boat operator is responsible for the safety of their vessel and passengers, as well as the safety of other boaters.”
Alcohol and drugs impair coordination, judgment and decision-making. They also slow a person’s reactions and ability to anticipate potential hazards.
Col. Sewell also advised boaters that the NRP will be increasing patrols for the Memorial Day weekend.
Boaters were also reminded to:
- Wear life jackets! They only work if you wear them.
- All children under the age of 7 must WEAR a life jacket while underway on a recreational vessel under 21 feet in length.
