The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has been holding auctions and sales of boats and other equipment for over 15 years. We hold sales statewide but the largest of the sales is at Matapeake Terminal in Queen Annes County. Items being sold generally fall into three categories. Items owned by the State but are declared surplus, items that are found or abandoned and items that are awarded to the DNR by the Courts as a result of hunting or fishing violations. The proceeds for items sold are used to help offset expenses accrued due to the investigation process. This allows the State to recover some of the taxpayers money spent on the case process as well as daily operations.
