Sharks Teeth on the Chesapeake Bay

Entrance SignEntrance SignFishing Pond BoardwalkTrail to BeachTrail to BeachTrail to BeachTrail EndCliffsBeachCliffsSearchingThere has been a lot of interest of late regarding hunting for sharks teeth and other fossils along the Western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The primary location for this activity is along the beaches of Calvert County, Maryland. Public beaches can be found at North Beach, Chesapeake Beach, Breezy Point, Flag Ponds, and Calvert Cliffs State Park. Calvert Cliffs State Park offers one of the best opportunities for fossil hunters. A hike of 2 miles is taken from the parking lot, along an unimproved trail to the cliffs/beach area. Visitors may hunt for fossils on the open beach area and keep what they find. Because of the constant erosion of the cliffs, access to the cliffs is no longer permitted. The park is also ideal for hiking and walking, picnicking, and fishing. Picnic tables and grills are provided and there is also a playground. Sorry, but pets are not allowed in the park. The area under the cliffs is closed due to landslide activity but fossil collecting can be done along the open beach where there are no cliffs. Call 301-872-5688 for information on pavilion rental (fee), youth group camping, or hunting. Limited access is available for the handicapped.
