'Lights on the Bay' Gears Up for Eighth Season - 12-18-2002
"Lights on the Bay," the popular holiday light show at Sandy Point State Park sponsored by the Auxiliary of Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC), will run from Friday, November 22 through Sunday, January 5 from 5-10 p.m. each evening. More than 60 stationary and animated displays will illuminate a two-mile drive along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.

Hartge Yacht Yard and Chalk Point Marine Pledge to Minimize Pollution - 12-4-2002
Anne Arundel County’s Hartge Yacht Yard in Galesville and Chalk Point Marine in West River recently vowed to take measures to protect Maryland’s waterways. By signing the Clean Marina Pledge, E. Alexander Schlegel and Donna Schlegel, owners and managers of Hartge Yacht Yard and Chalk Point respectively have committed to do their part to keep Maryland’s waterways free of harmful chemicals, excess nutrients and debris. A total of 158 boating facilities have now taken the Clean Marina Pledge.

No Lane Closures on Bay Bridge During Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend - 11-27-2002

The Chesapeake Bay Program is accepting public comments on its draft Comprehensive Oyster Plan for Chesapeake Bay, which fulfills an important commitment in the Chesapeake 2000 Bay Agreement that calls for developing a strategy to increase native Bay oysters tenfold by 2010 and help improve water quality.
The Diamondback Terrapin - 11-20-2002
Malaclemys terrapin, or the diamondback terrapin, is the only North American turtle that lives exclusively in brackish water, inhabiting estuarine embayments and marshes from southern New England to the Gulf of Mexico. The word "terrapin" is an Algonquin word for edible turtles that live in brackish water.
DNR Proposes Closing Burgess and Chicamuxen Creeks During Largemouth Bass Spawning Season - 11-20-2002
Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service Director Eric Schwaab today announced that a public hearing will be held on a proposal to establish fish refuge areas in the Potomac River tributaries of Burgess and Chicamuxen creeks, during the largemouth bass spawning season from March 1 to June 15. The hearing will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Cedarville Visitors Center.

State Record Atlantic Striped Bass Caught Off Assateague On Nov. 15 - 11-20-2002
Daniel Davis, of Littlestown, PA, had an exciting day of fishing last Friday at the Bullpen on Assateague Island. He caught a striped bass that weighed 48.2 pounds, which breaks the previous Atlantic striped bass state record of 45 pounds, 5 ounces, set back in 1994.

Anne Arundel County’s Casa Rio Marina in Mayo is the 51st marina in Maryland to earn the prestigious Clean Marina Award. Bay Bridge Closures Through November - 11-6-2002
Beginning October 14, and continuing to November 27, the center lane of the westbound Bay Bridge will be closed 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week as part of the ongoing reconstruction of the westbound bridge deck. The work, which is anticipated to be complete in 2005, involves renovation of the westbound bridge deck and railings in areas east and west of the bridge’s main suspension spans.

Portions of Southern Maryland Waters Closed to Shellfishing - 11-6-2002
Based upon a recent evaluation of shellfish harvesting areas in tributaries to the St. Mary’s and Patuxent Rivers which showed unacceptable bacteria levels, the Maryland Department of the Environment is closing portions of the conditionally approved areas in the St. Inigoes Creek and Carthegena Creek (tributaries to St. Mary’s River) and Cuckhold Creek (tributary to Patuxent River).

Angler John Slike, of Towson, landed a State record Atlantic spadefish on Sept. 8. Slike was fishing the African Queen wreck aboard Capt. Seth Hetherington's headboat Judith M, out of Bahia Marina in Ocean City with 30-pound test line and squid for bait.
New MD State Record Yellowfin Tuna - 10-1-2002
A New Jersey man hooked a new state record yellowfin tuna while on an overnight trip at the Washington Canyon 500 Fathom Tip. On Sunday Sept. 22 at 3 a.m., Mark Bennett of Salem, NJ hooked a 236.5 pound yellowfin tuna while chunking butterfish aboard the private boat Doghouse, captained by Edgar Lewis.

Maryland Boat Excise Tax Amnesty Period Underway - 9-12-2002
Legislation passed by the General Assembly last year created a tax amnesty period from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31, 2002, for boat owners who have not paid the vessel excise tax due when they purchased a boat or moved their boat into Maryland. The amnesty applies to individuals who purchased a boat in Maryland or principally used their boat in Maryland prior to Dec. 31, 2001. During the amnesty period, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will waive the 10 percent penalty payment if the owner pays the tax and interest due.

Snakehead Fish Found in Inner Harbor - 9-12-2002
Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service officials have confirmed that a 22-inch giant snakehead was captured by a local crabber near Fells Point. This fish is related to, but not the same, as the northern snakeheads in the Crofton Pond.

Rotenone Application Complete; More Than a 120 Snakehead Fish Dead - 9-6-2002
Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service officials recovered more than 120 juvenile snakehead fish, 1 adult snakehead fish and 60 pounds of other varieties of fish after applying the piscicide rotenone this morning to the four-acre Crofton pond and the adjacent smaller ponds.

Drought Conditions Lead to 10 Record Low Monthly Groundwater Levels in July - 8-12-2002
Current groundwater levels in Maryland and Delaware are lower in most wells than during the droughts of 1999 and the 1960s. Low groundwater and streamflow levels continue to reflect the long-term effects of hydrologic drought. Groundwater levels were below normal at the end of July at all of the 17 wells used for drought analysis in Maryland and Delaware, according to hydrologists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Ten of these wells set record low groundwater levels for July.

Plan to put Chinese oyster into Virginia waters on hold - 7-29-2002
CBF, state and federal fishery scientists, and other groups raised concerns about a controversial proposal by the Virginia Seafood Council to grow a million non-native Chinese (Crassostrea ariakensis) oysters in the Chesapeake Bay this summer. As a result, the council has agreed to revise their proposal and wait until a more reliable technique is available later this year for producing the sterilized Chinese oysters that they wish to raise through aquaculture.
New Commercial and Recreational Crab Size Limits Begin August 1st - 7-29-2002
New male crab catch size restrictions for the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries go into effect August 1. The new size regulations will help achieve the goal of doubling the number of crabs left in the Bay to spawn. The new minimum catch size for male crabs is 5 1/4". As in the past there is no minimum size for mature females.
