Four Maryland Marinas Take Clean Marina Pledge

Managers at Sweden Point Marina in Marbury (Charles County), Deep Creek Lake Recreational Area in Swanton (Garrett County), and Jennings Randolph Lake Boat Ramp (Garrett County), all 3 of which are Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) facilities, and Mears Yacht Haven in Oxford (Talbot County) have joined the ranks of boating facilities seeking recognition for their environmentally responsible operations. Each manager has pledged to do his part to "keep Maryland's waterways free of harmful chemicals, excess nutrients, and debris." To date, 43 marinas–including 38 private marinas and yacht clubs–have signed the Clean Marina pledge, which is a component of Maryland's Clean Marina Initiative (CMI).

To fulfill this pledge, each marina operator will implement measures to control pollution associated with vessel maintenance and repair; petroleum storage and transfer; sewage disposal; solid, liquid and hazardous wastes; stormwater runoff; and facilities management.

"Participation by state-run facilities is extremely important," said Elizabeth Fuller Valentine, Clean Marina Coordinator. "Their involvement demonstrates to the public that the State of Maryland practices the same types of pollution prevention measures that DNR recommends for private facilities."

CMI is a new program coordinated by DNR in partnership with the marine industry. CMI promotes and celebrates voluntary adoption of measures to reduce pollution from marinas and recreational boats. As the first step toward becoming a certified Clean Marina, marina operators are asked to sign a pledge indicating they will strive to prevent pollution. To achieve full standing as a Clean Marina, they must adopt a number of the recommendations in the Maryland Clean Marina Guidebook. The guidebook provides a comprehensive review of pollution prevention measures. Recognized Clean Marinas may use the Clean Marina logo in their advertising and on their letterhead. They also will receive a CMI flag to fly from their facility, a page on the Clean Marina web site (www.dnr.state.md.us/boating), and promotion in Clean Marina publications. Boaters are encouraged to patronize Maryland's Clean Marinas.
